Hi Friends,
How is everyone in your home? I hope healthy and happy. This time of year both of those can be difficult. Cold and Flu season is here and spreading around. Everyone in my family took turns being ill in December and it was no fun! With the darker, cooler, gloomier days of winter kids spend more time inside and this can lead to restlessness and unhappiness. Kids and adults can both get seasonal depression this time of year. Here are two resources to help out:
- Here are Six Tips to Keep Your Kids Healthy During Flu Season (University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital)
- Wash hands frequently at home and school.
- Be active indoors and out.
- Get between 9 and 14 hours of sleep, depending on age.
- Eat a well-balanced diet.
- Decrease stress.
- Avoid sharing items that come into contact with the mouth, face, or head such as cups, scarves, or caps.
- 10 Ways to Crush the Winter Blues is an article I wrote last year with ways to help beat the blahs. I've tried many of the suggestions and they work.
MLK Day is Monday
There are many events happening this long weekend to celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday. You can find several in MLK Day Family-Friendly Events in the Annapolis Area and Beyond. The holiday is also known as a Day of Service and is a time we can give to others and our community. This week's article, Celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. With a Day of Service has some great ideas on ways your family can participate. To help you teach your children about Martin and the work he did read 5 Facts to Share With Kids About Martin Luther King Jr.
Do You Run a Camp?
Right now I'm working on the 2023 Anne Arundel Summer Camp Guide. If you run a camp, contact me so you can be included. Macaroni KID readers are already looking for summer ideas. The guide will reach over 24,000 Macaroni KID subscribers of the three AA County MacKID publishers. The guide will also reach thousands of other families through social media and by visiting our three MacKID websites. Rates are reasonable and barter options are available. Email Darla at MacKIDAnnapolis@MacaroniKID.com for information and to have your camp listed in the guide.
Save the Date - March 18
I am also excited to announce the 2023 Anne Arundel Summer Camp Expo and Family Fun Day. The three AA County MacKID publisher are joining forces to put on this event. It will be March 18th from 11-3 at the Anne Arundel Community College. There will be representatives from area camps, activities for the kids, live entertainment, food for sell, and giveaways. Put this in your calendar right now! You won't want to miss this fun event for the entire family.
Until next week ... Peace, Love and Macaroni!
