Baby Supplies and More

By Sofia Asman, intern May 19, 2022

Interview with Rachael Myers, Branch Manager of Discoveries: The Library at the Mall about the Community Pantry.

  • Where is the pantry located?

The pantry is located at Discoveries: the Library at the Mall near Crate and Barrel, in the Westfield Annapolis Mall. Park on the green parking deck or near Macy’s.

  • Why was the pantry started?

When the library moved into its current larger space, Rachel Myers, the branch manager, had the opportunity to create a unique space to help the community. She thought about a food pantry. During Covid, Rachel realized there was a need for baby supplies and decided to create the Community Pantry and it grew to what it is today.

  • What needs are you filling in the community?

The items distributed at the pantry support families and meet basic needs.

  • How old is the pantry?

The grand opening for the pantry was July 17, 2021. Keep on the lookout for a first birthday celebration this July.

  • When is it open?

It is open every Saturday from 10-noon.

  • Who can get things from the pantry?

Anyone who has a library card.

If you are low on supplies during a certain week or know of someone who is, the pantry is available.

Approximately 60 families a week are serviced by the pantry. As of (5/15/22): 3643 people have been served by the pantry since July, 2021; 2265 packs of diapers have been distributed.

  • What do you have in the pantry?

They give out diapers, wipes, soap/shampoo, toothbrushes, toothpaste, nursing supplies, menstrual products and incontinence supplies.

  • Is it free to come and get stuff?

Yes it is free.

  • How do you get items for the pantry?

Supplies for distribution are primarily from donations.

Open packages of diapers and menstrual products are accepted.

  • Does the pantry have any partnerships with other organizations?

The Container Store provided the shelving for the pantry. Westfield Annapolis Mall collects supplies and publicizes the pantry. Organizations like the Junior League of Annapolis, local churches and businesses hold supply drives. Minor support from a small American Rescue Plan Act grant from Anne Arundel County.

  • How can the Macaroni KID Annapolis readers help?

You can drop off donations at any library in Anne Arundel County or online through their Amazon and Target wishlists. You can also host your own supply drive.
