School's Out for Summer Fun

Enjoy Enriching Activities, Outdoors and In!

Ahhhhh - it's summer!!!  Trees!  Flowers!!  Food growing in people's yards!!!  Swimming pool season!!!!  After a bumpy start to June, here we are ready to have fun in the sun!  The little lady and I have picked out our suits; stocked up on shades, sunscreen and mosquito spray; and procured floating devices, pails, shovels and beach towels.  We only need our pool pass to arrive in the mail . . . .

My daughter believes in being outside.  I think she could spend 75% of her waking hours roaming the outdoors.  This is the first year I feel like we can really dig in to the opportunities that summer offers us here in Maryland, and I can't wait to show her all of the things she can do out-of-doors beyond her yard and the playground.  One thing I think she will really enjoy is perusing the multitude of farmer's markets we have here in our area.  The little bug loves to shop as well as cook.  I think she will get a kick out of seeing the beautiful locally grown fruits, veggies and plants on display at these markets en plein air.

The Maryland Office of Tourism maintains a great list of farmer's market by county.  Click "Anne Arundel County" to see markets in our area.  While there are many wonderful markets listed, I know that we have even more in our area.  The new Diehl's stand in the lot of Adam's Ribs on Bay Ridge Avenue, for example.  And the Sunday market downtown.  Are you aware of markets in our area?  If so, please add them to the comment section.  What a fun way to get outside and teach our kids about local food and healthy eating!

And, full disclosure here, I am a librarian.  I do not work for the Anne Arundel County Public Library System (AACPL), but I used to!  Their wildly popular Summer Reading Club (SRC) is kicking off in branches across the county this week.  Please see the Macaroni calendar of events for a kickoff event near you.  It is summer vacation and our kids are getting a respite from the routine of school.  But it is our job as parents to make sure their brains continue to feed on fun learning experiences.  Your local library is one of the most amazing (and free) resources you can tap into to keep those brains exercising during this season.  My bug can't get enough of the Eastport branch of AACPL (and their cool puppet theater . . . )  I've spotlighted SRC programs in this week's newsletter.  Take your kids to the library and enjoy the very special and fun free programming - and then take advantage of their amazing collection of books and other media to keep your children's brain muscles growing healthy over the summer.

Go outside and play!  I hope to see you out there!

School Stops for Summer But Learning Never Should!

Summer Learning Tips for Parents

Kids aren't the only ones looking forward to summer. Even parents are ready for a break from the routine of homework, test stress and last-minute projects (if you haven’t found yourself buying poster board at 9 p.m. on a Sunday night, congratulations, your kid is perfect.) But just because school’s out, that doesn’t mean learning should take a complete vacation. I know, I know…just hear me out on this.

For most kids on a traditional nine-month school calendar, it’s easy to get out ...
