Although Valentine's Day is for celebrating romance and love, kids want to be included. They give and receive Valentine's Day cards with their friends, make heart shaped crafts, and eat special treats. Below is an idea for making the holiday meaningful for your kids by sharing with them all the reasons you love them.
I recently heard about a mom who put love notes on her daughter's bedroom doors each night from February 1st through 14th. She would write on a heart or sticky note something she loved about her daughter and placed it on her door after she fell asleep. In the morning, her daughter would read the love note and feel special. The mom said, "Every day we tell them and show our love for them. But for some reason writing it down and hanging it up really changes their perspective. At first, it seemed they liked looking at them and would get excited in the moment, but I didn't realize how much of an impact it would have".
"Now each year my daughter seems to get more and more excited that these hearts will start appearing on February 1st reminding her of all of the wonderful qualities she has. It's the end of January and the hustle and bustle of the holidays and I'm thinking ah, February should be a little calmer. My daughter told me she couldn't wait till next Wednesday. I asked why and she said it's February 1st and you start putting hearts on my door! It wasn't even on my radar yet and she was already counting down. This little gesture has now become a loved tradition in my house and I'm so happy it makes her feel so good".
"I've changed it up over the years and purchased/made different hearts for the door. You could even use sticky notes to make it easier. It's seriously the thought that counts and them seeing in writing whenever they walk in and out of their room how loved they are and what makes them so special. This year she asked me to get her some hearts because she wants to do it to my door too. If that's not love, I don't know what is. Try it. It will be worth it for so much longer that you realize".
