May Day is May 1st and that means Annapolis will be decorated with hundreds of colorful floral baskets. This is one of my favorite celebrations in Annapolis.
It's the perfect day to take a stroll with your family and explore downtown Annapolis. Businesses and homes in our historic city will feature beautiful baskets full of fresh-cut flowers and flowing ribbons. Bring your camera and enjoy, rain or shine.

May Day in Annapolis began in 1956 when the Garden Club of Old Annapolis began a beautification project. The day has grown into a tradition in which residents and business owners compete for winning ribbons and an invitation to the Garden Club's Annual May Day Tea.
Sixty-nine years later, May Day in Annapolis is still going strong.
“Seeing the May baskets on display in Annapolis is a collective feeling of the warm summer sun on your face,” said Mayor Gavin Buckley. “You wait all year for the signs of spring, and when the baskets are hung on the doors on May 1, you know the snow and winter weather is gone for good.”

HOW TO ENTER THE MAY DAY CONTEST
For residents and businesses in Downtown Annapolis and Murray Hill neighborhoods.
Residential arrangements must be in baskets and include a card indicating the name of the participant. Merchants can use a container that reflects an element of their business.
Children are encouraged to make baskets and will be judged in a special category. Please attach a card with the child’s name and age to their basket.
All displays must include first and last name and be out by 10 a.m. on May 1 for judging by Garden Club members.
Adult blue ribbon winners will receive an invitation to a special May Day Tea on Thursday, May 3.
