The long winter... err, Spring?... has made for long hours indoors and at home. And it turns out, my big family can make some really big messes. Not only that, but all of this time at home is making me notice how much needs to be done around here. There is touch up painting to be done (seriously, why do kids feel the need to touch the wall as they walk down the hallway?), closets to be organized (my son has grown like a weed this winter!), and windows to be washed.
This past week I decided to get a jump start on my spring cleaning (if it feels like Spring, I am allowed to clean like it's Spring!) using two of my favorite "green" cleaning recipes. Yes, making your own household cleaning products is very simple and I bet you have the ingredients in your home already. These cleaners are safer for the environment and safer for your family because they don't have any harsh chemicals. This week I'm sharing two "recipes" from my arsenal. A window and glass cleaner to get your windows shining and a furniture polish that is perfect for your dining room table and bookshelves.
Window Cleaner
1 cup of water
1 cup of club soda
1 tsp of cornstarch
a squeeze of fresh lemon juiceย
Add ingredients into a clean and empty spray bottle (check the travel-sized beauty product section at Walmart, Meijer and Target for inexpensive bottles) and shake until the cornstarch is dissolved. Spray onto windows and use newspaper to wipe clean. To avoid streaks, clean windows when the sun is not shining directly on them. Store in a cool, dry place. Shake again before each use.
Wood Furniture Polish
1/2 cup of olive oil
1/4 cup lemon juice
Add both ingredients to a small spray bottle. Shake well. Spray a small amount onto a cleaning rag (flannel works best!). Spread evenly onto wood furniture. Use a dry cleaning rag to wipe clean and polish dry. Store in a cool, dry place for up to one month. (It's a good idea to try this on just a small spot first, just in case. We don't want the finish on your great-great-grandma's wardrobe getting ruined if it doesn't mix well with this cleaner.)
