You Don't Know What You Don't Know

By Nicole Donnelly, Macaroni Kid Annapolis August 25, 2016
As a mom, I do so much work in researching gear, toys and items that are going to keep my babies safe. I spent hours finding the car seat with the highest safety ratings. I baby proofed our home. I looked into the highest quality baby food, and even made myr own so I knew exactly what my kids were consuming. The one thing I never even thought to research is the skin care products I use on my precious babes.

You don't know what you don't know. I was made aware of the
the vastly under regulated beauty industry two years ago, and honestly rolled my eyes. I mean, as humans, we have been using so many of the same skin products for decades! How bad can they possibly be?! Eventually, my eyes slowly opened. It took two years, but I finally gave in and did some research of my own.

Just 11 ingredients are banned in personal care products in the U.S. compared to nearly 1,400 in Europe. I was shocked to learn that the federal law that governs the multi-billion dollar beauty industry was passed in 1938, and since that time 10,000 new chemicals have been introduced!  I learned that it is perfectly legal for products to contain known carcinogens like formaldehyde, even in baby products. I took a close look at my son's bubble bath, my hair products, my make up. And that was it. I needed to do better for my family and myself.

I was introduced to Beautycounter by a friend of mine and was instantly hooked. Aside from the fact that the products are gorgeous and effective, they contain ZERO ingredients that have ever been linked to human illness. In fact, Beautycounter bans over 1,500 ingredients from their products... a stark contrast from the 11 that the government bans.

Beautycounter's products all rate the lowest on EWG.org/skindeep, which means they are safe for myself, my husband and my kids. Plus the products are safe for pregnant and nursing mamas!

Decades ago, seat belts weren't required in cars and it's really hard for us to imagine that. We hope that our children will also have a hard time believing us when we talk to them about the change that Beautycounter has spurred in this industry.
